Face data and the TrueDepth camera
On devices with a TrueDepth front camera, Peep uses Apple's ARKit face tracking to work out a single number: roughly how far your face is from the screen, in centimetres. That distance is the only thing Peep derives from the camera.
Peep does not collect, receive, or have access to any other face data. It never reads the camera image, and it never captures photos or video. It does not collect depth maps, face mesh or geometry, facial expressions or blend shapes, eye position, or gaze direction. No camera image is ever shown on screen — the face-tracking session runs in the background purely as a distance sensor.
The distance measurement is used for two features:
- Distance Coach — an optional feature you switch on yourself. When the screen is held closer than about 30 cm for more than a moment, Peep shows a gentle on-screen reminder to sit back, and the end-of-session summary shows what percentage of the session was spent at a comfortable distance.
- Near & Far — an eye exercise where physically moving the screen closer or further away brings a character into focus. The distance controls a blur effect on screen in real time.
Nothing is stored. The distance exists for an instant while the exercise is running and is then discarded. Peep never writes face data or distance measurements to your device's storage, to iCloud, or to any server. Because nothing is retained, there is nothing to delete — the camera session is shut down as soon as the exercise ends.
Nothing is shared. Face data is never transmitted off your device and is never shared with us or with any third party. Peep has no server and no account system, so there is nowhere for it to go.
Peep never uses the camera to identify or recognise anyone, and never uses it for authentication, security, or advertising. Peep does not use Face ID. The camera is never used unless you are actively in an exercise that needs it, and iOS will always ask your permission first — you can withdraw it at any time in Settings, and Peep keeps working without it.
What stays on your device
Your owls, settings, and training progress are stored locally using Apple's on-device storage. If you have iCloud enabled, they may also sync privately through your own iCloud account so your progress follows you between your devices. We have no access to your iCloud data. None of this is ever sent to us, and it is removed if you delete the app. No account or sign-in is required.
Analytics
Peep uses TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service, to understand in aggregate whether the app is working — for example, how many people finish onboarding or complete a training session. It receives only a small, fixed list of anonymous product events such as “onboarding completed”, “workout completed”, “paywall shown” and “purchase completed”.
It does not receive any camera, face, or distance information. It does not receive your name, email, or any content you create in the app. It does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), and Peep does not track you across other apps or websites.
Purchases
Peep Plus subscriptions and the lifetime unlock are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store, under Apple's Privacy Policy. We never see your payment details — the app only checks with Apple whether a purchase has been made.
Children
Peep is designed to be used by families. It does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children under 13. There are no accounts, no messaging, no user-generated content shared with others, and no third-party advertising.
Deleting your data
You can erase everything Peep has stored at any time from Settings → Delete All Data inside the app, which removes every owl and all progress from the device. Deleting the app also removes its local data. There is no face data to delete, because none is ever kept.
Your rights
Because we do not collect or store your personal data, there is nothing for us to access, correct, or delete on our servers. If you have any question about your privacy, contact us using the details below.
