Description

In one line

Geodancer is a rhythm roguelike: every attack is judged against the music, and you can play it with your own songs.

In a paragraph

Every fight in Geodancer runs on a song. Attacks come out instantly, but only the ones that land on the beat do real damage, build the combo and fill the groove meter. Every enemy attack is signalled one beat early, so the player dodges and parries by listening. Stay in time and the stage lights up, the music opens out and the crowd joins in. A run is a tour of four venues, each ending in a headliner boss, and no two runs are the same build: a boon is picked after every wave. The tempo is the difficulty, from pop at 124 BPM to rap metal at 184. Players can also drop in their own MP3s, and the game builds a fight around the track.

Features

  • Every attack is judged against the music. On-beat hits are a PERFECT; off-beat hits barely scratch.
  • Every enemy attack is signalled one beat early, so it can be dodged or parried by ear.
  • Every run is a different build: a boon is picked after every wave, from 40+ across seven families.
  • Staying on the beat fills a groove meter that raises damage, relights the stage and opens up the music.
  • A four-venue Tour, each ending in a headliner boss, followed by a final rival who mirrors the player.
  • One weapon, the Neon Edge: a fast energy blade with a 360° spin finisher and a dash-parry.
  • Play with your own music: drop in an MP3 and the game detects the tempo and downbeat and builds a fight around it.
  • Music made for the game, from pop at 124 BPM to rap metal at 184, with EDM, K-pop, Latin hip hop, trap and chiptune in between.
  • A daily Tour with its own line-up and leaderboard, and a mid-run call-and-response rhythm battle.
  • Three difficulty settings, audio offset calibration and a reduced-flashing mode.

About the developer

AW Labs is a one-person studio. Geodancer is designed, programmed and built by Alvin Wong in Godot.

How it was made

The gameplay, code, design, enemy and boss choreography, visual effects and the vector art style are the developer’s own work. The music tracks, some 2D art (venue backdrops, crowd and poster art, per-song art) and some boss sound effects were made with AI tools, then selected, edited and integrated by the developer. The game generates nothing with AI while you play. The same disclosure is on the Steam page.
